move to the music

R.I.P. Dane Searls

Too much of this has been happening lately, it's truly sad. Way too young and talented to leave us this early. I met Dane over the summer of 2007, there was a big session going down at Solame right around the Portland Dew Tour time that summer. I remember seeing him ride before I had the chance to introduce myself. His presence stood out strongly, he was ripping all the lines, throwing down big moves, going insanely high and whipping it beyond sideways while wearing a pair of board shorts.

Dane spent a lot of time in the northwest over the course of the next few summers. A psyched Aussie, who couldn't get enough of the northwest trails. His demeanor was humble and relaxed. A young man who was pushing bmx trail riding to new levels, he was not afraid. Dane you be remembered forever in the northwest, i'm glad I had the chance to ride and hang with you while you were in the states. For wherever your spirit is now, i'm sure your facing challenges and obstacles without fear or hesitation. RIP warrior...

Scored a couple of really fun days surfing the straits, so happy to get some waves there. Thanks to all the PA locals for the hospitality and good times. Extra cheers to Dante for hooking up a brand new beautiful T rice!

And now the last couple weeks, we've been sliding down the mountains again. I'm very excited for the winter to come, Alpental's opening friday I think i'm gonna have to get out of work for the day for this one. My inside's are telling me I need to live closer to the mountains, I know the lifestyle would be good for me.

the reward is in the effort

I really appreciate all the places i've been lucky enough to travel to and all of the people i've met through those experiences. It's this energy that keeps me going time after time. Life's a big ship of searching and creating. When the stars align, the magic moments happen...but it's through your soul and internal desires where you have to jump off the comfort wagon and live your life. Get uncomfortable out there, don't always do what's easiest. When your friend asks you what you've been up too, have something worthwhile to share with them. Take control of your existence...

Hey there

Jeremy Jones' Further - An HD Snowboard Film by Teton Gravity Research

The word epic has become very overused in recent years. Epic this, epic that...kind of undermines the word when every yahoo is out there saying it. In the case of Jeremy Jones and crew split boarding and riding insane lines throughout the far reaches of the world, the word epic holds more than it's value being used here. Can't wait to get myself on a split this winter. Back to back La nina's are what the weather experts are saying. Bring it on, i'd favor a La Nina winter every year myself. This week you can kinda fell winter knocking on our door, getting excited.

Here a couple of video's I found online this week from the Arob festival. It was an amazing gathering, the Robinson family really put together a great event. Lots of love and support in the air there, it was great to be a part of so many talented and happy people coming together to celebrate the life of one great man we all loved. Arob forever...

The freedom of summer

During one of the nights we were at Photosynthesis, a nice man from the Makah tribe gave one of our camping neighbors Sarah a fresh Salmon he had pulled from the sea earlier in the day. Victor, the sushi chef went to work and prepared the fish for the group to enjoy.

I remember taking this photo and going out for a sunset surf. Came back to camp and the Salmon sampling had just began. Eating salmon while washing it down with tecate standing around the fire wearing half a wetsuit, chattin away with friends old and new, and getting excited for a full night of music and bonfires. Life can be so sweet and amazing at times, know when your moments are.

R.I.P. Aaron Robinson

I first met Aaron "Arob" Robinson in April 2006 on trip with Steven Hamilton up to BC. We stopped at the Arlington bowl for a sesh on the way. We had showed up to a pretty heavy skate session as the only 2 on a bmx. Hamilton opted for his skate over bmx, making me the only one on a bike. The bowl was pretty new at the time so not that many skaters there were exactly psyched on bikes being there. I worked my way into the bowl's rotation and it turned into a great session, having a blast riding and making some new friends. One guy inparticular who was going faster, airing higher, looping the capsule, smiling, shouting, and showing stoke for some bike airs more then any other skater there was Aaron. We got to talking a bunch, connecting well on snowboarding, traveling, both being new to Seattle, and psych for life and shredding in general. After the sesh, we had a safety meeting in the dugouts of the ball field across the street. Since Steven and I were on our way to the border we had to get rid of our belongings, which ended up taking a of couple rounds. Freshly blazed we chilled in the dugout for a while chattin away mostly about going up to whistler and snowboarding in the northwest. We exchanged numbers and began hanging out that summer.

Arob lived between Seattle and a cabin out in Snoqualmie Pass for the first few years I was in Seattle. He was a great guy to have around and we often chilled, hit skateparks, and took a few camping trips together. Back in 2006, I was very new to backcountry snowboarding, in fact Aaron was the first person I ever followed to other side of the ropes at Alpental. It was unreal riding with him, he was so comfortable and just naturally belonged back there. He opened my eyes to how I would want to ride a snowboard. He was worlds ahead of me at sliding down mountains, but would always wait for me and share his knowledge of what he knew in order to help me out. In a sense he was my sensai with snowboarding, opening up a beautiful world to me that I continue to get more and more involved in as each year passes.

Arob has been a huge influence in my life since that time. I have always been so impressed at the life he was living. He was incredible, so much natural talent and enthusiasm for everything he was involved in. Whether it be snowboarding, skating, playing music, traveling, being happy, motivating a group to do something, he did it all so well. His energy was unreal, he always knew what he wanted and what needed to be done in order to get there. He's the most nomadic person I have ever met. For the past few years i'm not sure if was in any one location for more than a few months at a time. Montana, Washington, Oregon, California, BC, Alasksa, Hawaii, Chile, etc....the biggest free spirit i've ever known. He always had a smile on his face, and was always excited about whatever was happening.

I love you Arob, thanks for all the great times and everything you've shown me. The cascades won't be the same without you, but you'll be with everyone who loved you forever. You are seriously one of the best people who has ever lived, you were amazing at life and lived it to the fullest. Getting to share experiences with a guy like you is what makes life worth living. You're one of my hero's! I'll hold onto the energy and spirit I know from you for the rest of my days, and will ride Alpental for the legend of Arob!

Aaron's life was taken last week in a fall resulting in severe head trauma while snowboarding down in Chile. He was 24.
Aaron's (purple jacket) split section with legend Temple Cummins all filmed at Mt. Baker over the 09 - 10 winter.

Snoqualmie flow

Don't have too many friends that have a kayak, so paddling is usually a solo mission for me. My favorite spot for white water is the middle fork of the Snoqualmie river. I like these days a lot cause it's pretty much just me, my kayak, the river, and the elements of nature. A real good way to test yourself and get an understanding of your abilities and the power the river has. It's a full mission, driving alongside the river making mental notes of entry and exit points. I'll find a place to put in, usually float 6 to 8 miles of the river, get out at my exit, stash the kayak find the road and start walking the few miles back towards my car. Most of the time i walk a mile or so and then hitch a ride with an incoming car the rest of the way.

Most of the river is class III rapids. It definitely sparks the adrenaline, floating from rapid to rapid, avoiding rocks as much as possible, finding your flow. It's amazingly peaceful knowing it's just you out there, you have to be on it. Some sections scare me too much to do, so i'll have to get out and hike alongside the river bed until i can get to safer section. The battle of man vs nature is incredible, but always keep respect for where you are, it's big country out there and humans are small and easily swallowed.
